About Jeremy

A Therapist Committed to Working With Complexity

Jeremy Cohen is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker with a Master’s degree in Social Work and over twenty-five years of clinical experience across some of Australia’s most challenging and diverse settings. His career has taken him from the Australian Red Cross and Sydney’s Medically Supervised Injecting Centre early in his career to Sunshine Hospital’s mental health services, Ballarat Regional Integrated Cancer Centre, Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct, community health counselling and private practice.

Throughout this journey, Jeremy’s therapeutic focus has consistently been on clinical complexity working with couples and families in crisis, marginalised communities, people navigating drug use and addiction, patients and their loved ones facing cancer, and clients managing dual diagnosis presentations (simultaneous mental health and substance use issues). He has honed his therapeutic skills in these highly demanding clinical environments and brings that depth of experience to every client he sees in private practice today.

Approach to Practice

Jeremy defines himself as an eclectic clinician, meaning he draws from many different treatment approaches according to the needs of each unique client. His practice is collaborative, creative, and outcome-focused. He believes in working with clients as partners in the therapeutic process, making decisions together about which therapeutic approaches and interventions will be most helpful at any given time.
Jeremy is solution-focused while also understanding that sustainable change often requires time, particularly when working with complex trauma, entrenched patterns, or deep relational wounds. He recommends beginning with an initial episode of three to six sessions to establish whether the therapeutic relationship is a good fit, followed by a collaborative ‘pause and reflect’ session to review progress and discuss future direction.

Beyond the Therapy Room

Jeremy is married and has two children. He is a passionate novice in surfing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and enjoys reading, gardening, and painting. In another lifetime he was a drummer in a grunge band and will pay good money to have any copies of the one LP his band made in the 1990s destroyed.

Jeremy brings his full humanity to the therapeutic space—his experiences as a parent, partner, and person navigating life’s challenges inform his work with deep empathy and authentic understanding of what it means to struggle, grow, and find meaning in complex times.
